IARC recently published its review of scientific evidence related to coffee and cancer and has announced that it has classified coffee in Group 3 for agents “not classifiable as to carcinogenicity to humans.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization. Its objective is to promote international collaboration in cancer research, in part by assessing the strength of scientific evidence demonstrating a causal relationship between the intake of certain foods and cancer.
The results of the IARC study are without a doubt very important, but not surprising. This WHO agency had already conducted an evaluation of coffee in 1991 and the extensive scientific literature to date has not shown a link between coffee consumption and cancer, at any body site. In some cases, it even found evidence that drinking coffee may actually help reduce the occurrence of certain cancers, such as liver and endometrial cancer.
Coffee is one of the most-studied food substances around. In recent years, it has been the focus of roughly 25,000 scientific studies, and seven epidemiological studies conducted in 2014 also highlighted that coffee consumption can lengthen our lives.
In fact, a moderate coffee consumption can benefit other aspects of the human body, as well: from memory to concentration, from physical performance to slowing down age-related cognitive decline, from a reduction in the risk of neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease) to a strong preventive and protective action affecting type 2 diabetes and a number of liver diseases, including cirrhosis, steatosis and hepatitis.
Moreover, the British Liver Trust has also launched a report concluding that drinking moderate amounts of coffee (typically 3-5 cups per day) supports better liver health, can slow the progression of liver disease in some patients, and lowers the risk of other liver conditions including fibrosis. Best of all, these beneficial effects have been found regardless of the way the coffee is prepared: espresso, filtered or instant.
Thus, it can be said that drinking coffee actually helps us live better and longer!
